WHY DID THEY CUT DOWN ALL THE GIANT TREES

Here in Plain Dealing, LA they just built a new sawmill. Any day I'm on the streets I'm subject to see five or more logging trunks filled with logs from cut down trees.
It's painful to see but they will say it's progress and plant seedlings in their place.  Yes, that may be so in some cases. However, when they do plant seedlings that whole environment becomes sterile no life.  :'(
